The Vision: An interactive exploration of sound and heat, this installation transforms a standard acoustic piano into a visceral display of fire. The goal was to visualize music not just through light, but through physical intensity, creating an experience where the musician literally plays with fire.
The Engineering: This project required a safety-critical embedded system where failure was not an option. I architected a custom control unit using C/C++ firmware to map MIDI and mechanical key inputs to high-pressure propane solenoid valves.
Safety-First Architecture: To mitigate the risk of fuel accumulation, I implemented a robust state-machine pattern with hard-coded safety interlocks, ensuring valves could never remain in a "stuck-open" state.
Real-Time Responsiveness: The system utilized direct hardware interrupts to ensure zero-latency actuation, maintaining tight synchronization between the pianist's fingers and the flame bursts.
